Driving in Winnipeg can be treacherous in winter.
Be careful this winter, Winnipeg.
Proper posture is important for spinal health, especially when driving.
The combination of cold weather and increased traffic congestion often has us tensed up behind the wheel. Remember to RELAX! Make sure that your lumbar spine is supported, while keeping your shoulders and head back. The head rest can reduce the severity of a whiplash injury and should be positioned accordingly. The head rest should be raised to ear level, with only a few centimetres between your head and the support. By adjusting the height, distance and tilt of your seat you should find your knees parallel to your hips. Both your arms and legs should be bent, however the angle should be greater than 90 degrees, maintaining a safe distance from the steering wheel and airbag.
Whiplash injuries can vary depending on the severity of the collision and also the individual affected. Also keep in mind that whiplash injuries can occur at low speeds as well as high speed impacts. Interestingly, there is some evidence that might indicate that low speed collisions, while causing less damage to the vehicle, might lead to more injury. Additionally, pre-existing conditions are often aggravated along with the symptoms of the actual injury. Whiplash injuries can be unique – the beginning of certain symptoms can occur several days to weeks after the accident. The range in symptoms can often be significant, including: neck and back pain, jaw pain, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and many others.
Following a motor vehicle accident, tune in to what your body is telling you. The onset of symptoms may vary, some symptoms can be immediate and some may begin the following morning or even days later. Document everything regarding your subjective complaint. Where does it hurt? At what point in time did it being to affect you? Are there any changes to your range of motion? Have you noticed symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or ringing in the ears? Are you able to perform regular daily activities?
